Need more help?
Is a DVR more secure than an NVR?
Because DVR systems are often “closed-circuit” and do not require a constant internet connection to function, they are generally less vulnerable to remote cyber-attacks. For high-security environments where network privacy is the top priority, a standalone DVR system provides a localized, physical recording solution that is difficult for hackers to access.
Do modern DVRs support 4K or 5MP resolution?
Absolutely. While older analog systems were limited to low resolutions, modern HD-TVI and HD-CVI technology allows our DVRs to record in 2MP (1080p), 5MP, and even 4K over standard coaxial cable. This allows you to achieve near-IP quality images while maintaining the reliability of a hardwired analog connection.
Can I use my existing BNC cables with a new DVR
Yes. One of the primary advantages of a modern Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is its ability to utilize existing coaxial (RG59) cabling. If your building is already wired for analog cameras, you can simply swap out your old recorder for a new high-definition DVR without the high cost of pulling new Ethernet cables through your walls.
How far away can I mount my cameras from the DVR?
Coaxial cable is excellent for long-distance runs. While Ethernet cables for NVRs are generally limited to 328 feet without a booster, a DVR using high-quality RG59 coaxial cable can transmit video signals up to 1,500 feet (500 meters) with minimal signal loss. This makes DVRs a preferred choice for large warehouses or properties with expansive perimeters.
How much storage is required for an 8-channel or 16-channel DVR?
Storage needs depend on your “Bitrate” and “Frame Rate.” For a standard 16-channel DVR recording at 1080p (2MP), we recommend a minimum of 8TB to 10TB of surveillance-grade storage to keep roughly 30 days of footage. For systems using motion-based recording instead of 24/7 continuous recording, you can often double the amount of history stored on the same drive.
What is the difference between "Surveillance-Grade" and Desktop Hard Drives?
It is critical to use Surveillance-Grade drives (like WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk) in your DVR. Unlike standard PC hard drives designed to run 8 hours a day, surveillance drives are engineered to operate 24/7 and handle the high-heat, constant-write workloads of 16+ simultaneous video streams. Using a standard PC drive in a DVR often leads to premature disk failure and lost footage.
Can I view my DVR footage on my phone?
Yes. Modern DVRs are “Networkable.” By connecting the Ethernet port on the back of your DVR to your internet router, you can use our secure mobile app to view live and recorded video from anywhere. This gives you the reliability of a hardwired analog system with the convenience of modern cloud-style remote access.
